10. Henrik Larsson
Henrik was a Swedish international who spent most time of his career playing for Celtic as a striker. It was on October 21st 1999, when Celtic was visiting France to play against Lyon, when he suffered a double leg break in the tussle. Initially the thoughts were that his career was over but he underwent surgery in Glasgow and was ruled out of action for more than 8 months. After returning from the injury, Larsson had one of the best seasons of his career scoring 53 goals in all competitions and winning the European Golden Boot award.
9. Alan Smith
The English international also faced a pretty dangerous injury in February 2006. Manchester United had traveled to play against Liverpool in an FA cup match. He was blocking a shot from the opponent player when he did not fell accurately on his foot resulting in breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle. He had to stay out of the game for seven months and on his return, he was able to win the Premier League title with Manchester United. He joined Newcastle united in 2006 and made 94 appearances.
8. Kieron Dyer
In the Carling Cup match between West Ham and Bristol Rovers, Dyer also suffered from a fetal injury. His leg fractured from two points and he was ruled out for the rest of the season. His career went through many ups and downs after that and the Englishman was never able to adjust himself facing constant smaller injuries which shuddered his confidence. His career ended in 2012 when he returned to his initial club Ipswich as their academy coach.
7. Djibril Cisse
Cisse can be considered as one of the unluckiest footballers when it comes to injuries. He got two back to back injuries. He got his first injury in the match between Liverpool and Blackburn when both the teams were in the premier league clash in 2004-05 season. His boot was caught in the turf and he had to suffer from broken tibia and fibula. Initial speculations were that he may not join the team for more than 7 months. Later it was revealed that, had the trainers not pointed towards him immediately after the incident, he may have lost his leg. After words on his return, in a friendly match against China, he became off balanced and his leg got twisted. He was then again ruled out of the world cup 2006.
6. Luc Nilis
Nilis was the top scorer of his league while playing for PSV in 1996-97 and when he joined Aston Villa, the fans were having very high expectations from him, but the luck was not in his favor. In the match between Aston Villa and Ipswich, he faced the injury of broken leg which became the cause of ending his career at the age of 33. He then joined the coaching staff of PSV team and then became the assistant manager of a Turkish club.
5. Eduardo da Silva
Another inclusion in this list is of the Brazilian striker Eduardo who suffered from broken fibula and dislocated ankle in the match against Birmingham City when he used to play for Arsenal. The tackle by Martin Tylor proved to be horrific for him and Tylor was immediately sent off. His injury appeared so severe that Sky Sports decided not to show the replays of the incident. He could not join his team for almost 12 months and finally made his comeback in February 2009 against Cardiff City.
4. Petr Cech
It is normally believed that in this game, only the outfield players have the risk to get injured. But in the premier league match, while playing against Reading, this goal keeper sustained a dreadful injury in October 2006. While he was in his own half guarding the goal for Chelsea, he collided with the opponent player and suffered a blow on his head. After a treatment of several minutes, he finally had to be substituted with another keeper who also got injured in the same match. Cech was advised to stay out of the competitions for at least three months and ever since his return in the field, he has had many remarkable performances for his club that make him one of the best goal keepers of the modern age.
3. Neymar Jr
Just couple of days ago, Neymar also suffered an injury in his world cup campaign. While the hosts were playing against Columbia in an intense quarterfinal, Neymar was kneed from behind by the opponent player while both players were trying to win the ball. But that tackle was more of a desperation than a fair challenge. Brazil went on to win the match eventually but the fans were really disappointed after that because their star player is ruled out for the rest of the tournament. With the exclusion of their top scorer from the competition, it becomes a very difficult task for them to beat the German’s in the semifinal, who are one of the favorites to win the cup this year.
2. Alf Inge Haaland
The derby matches between two football clubs are always more energetic and enthusiastic than others. These matches are played more for the pride than for winning. A similar match was played between two arch rivals of the premier league Manchester United and Manchester City back in April 2001.The whole incident started back in 1997 when Keane got an injury by a foul from Haaland. After that, in 2001 Keane deliberately fouled Haaland on the knee and was immediately shown red card for his disgraceful act. Initially Keane was fined £5,000 and suffered a three match ban but after words, FA committee gave him additional five match ban and £150,000 fine.
1. David Busst
According to most of the football fans and critics, the worst football injury ever in the history was of David Busst on April 8, 1996. In the match between Coventry City and Manchester United, Busst was tackled by not one but two players from the opponent team and that resulted in the fracture of his tibia and fibula.
The incident was so severe that there was blood all over the ground and it took more than 10 minutes to clear it all.The gravity of the incident can be realized from the fact that Manchester’s goal keeper vomited on the spot. That match proved to be the last match of his career and was forced to retire after seven months. -
